Cape Town, South Africa, September 2 (Infosplusgabon) – South Africa’s hugely popular rugby captain Siya Kolisi has been selected as an official Adidas ambassador.

Previous sports stars who have enjoyed the honour include Lionel Messi and David Beckham.

PANA reports that Kolisi, who grew up in desperate poverty in an Eastern Cape township, lead South Africa to a famous Rugby World Cup victory in Japan last November.

An emotional Kolisi dedicated the historic victory to the people of South Africa, saying: "We have so many problems in our country, but a team like this, we come from different backgrounds and different races. We came together with one goal, and we wanted to achieve it. I really hope we've done that for South Africa. It just shows that we can pull together if we want to achieve something."

President Cyril Ramaphosa who flew to Japan for the match, celebrated with the players.

Kolisi is the first black player to lead the national team and the first South African to be honoured by the global sports giant.

“Sport might not be the answer right now, but it teaches us this: that impossible challenges must be faced and overcome. And the reward is joy. And it will always be that way,” Kolisi says in the new global Adidas commercial.

During the apartheid era, blacks were barred from representing the Springbok team. However, when Nelson Mandela swept into power on a ticket of racial reconciliation, he celebrated the country’s first ever World Cup victory in Johannesburg in 1995.
