Tripoli, Libya, September 2 (Infosplusgabon) - Libyan Parliament Speaker, Aguila Saleh, has asked for  support of the European Union (EU) to maintain the ceasefire in Libya and contribute to fair distribution of the country's oil revenues.

Saleh made the request during a meeting on Tuesday in al-Qobba (East), with the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, who was visiting Libya where, in Tripoli, met the President of the Presidential Council, Fayez al-Sarraj, and other Libyan officials.

Mr Saleh asked for "the support of the European Union for the maintenance and respect of the ceasefire in place and to neutralise the oil revenues by depositing the money in a special account which is frozen until a unified authority is formed in Libya", the spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Abdallah Belaihak, said in a press statement.

Mr. Fayez al-Sarraj and Saleh on 21 August proclaimed a ceasefire throughout Libya, and called for "resumption of oil production and export while freezing its revenues in a special account at the Libyan Foreign Bank pending an arrangement between Libyans".

Mr Belaihak added that Mr Saleh underlined the need to seize the current opportunity to put pressure on all parties in Libya to end the political crisis and alleviate the suffering of the Libyan people. He stressed that this will only happen with the formation of a new authority that relieves the suffering of the people.

For his part, Borrell said he had "full confidence in the Speaker of the House of Representatives", promising that "he will provide a full explanation of Aguila Saleh's initiative to the European Union and ask for its support".

According to him, "there will also be a communication from the Union in the coming period with a number of Arab and international parties to strengthen the ceasefire and support the initiative".

He also affirmed the full solidarity of the EU  with the Speaker of the House of Representatives on the issue of rejecting any foreign interference in Libya.
