Tripoli, Libya, August 30 (Infosplusgabon) - The US Embassy in Libya has announced support for the rule of law in Libya, giving the assurance that it appreciates its close partnership with the Chairman of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, and Interior Minister Fathi Bachagha.

In a tweet on Saturday it called for cooperation between the two for the good governance of the Libyan people.

The United States Embassy quoted a publication of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) that called for "a return to a full and inclusive political process that will meet the aspirations of the Libyan people for a representative government, dignity and peace".

This follows protests in the capital, Tripoli, and other cities and subsequent developments.

UNSMIL has expressed concern about the excessive use of force against demonstrators as well as the arbitrary arrest of a number of civilians. It also noted with concern reports of violations and human rights abuses in Sirte.

The violations include the death of a civilian and the arbitrary detention of a number of people and the forcible and illegal entry into private property.

The Presidential Council on Friday suspended the Minister of the Interior of the Government of National Accord, Bachagha, and decided to subject him to an administrative inquiry into the permission given for the demonstrations, protection for demonstrators and their repression.

In reaction, Mr. Bachagha welcomed the Council's decision, requesting that the administrative investigation be broadcast live.

Demonstrations, attended mostly by young people, have been organised in recent days in Tripoli and other Libyan cities to denounce the deterioration of living conditions, mismanagement and endemic corruption in public institutions.

Security organs have suppressed the demonstrations, causing controversy in the country.
