Tunis, Tunisia, August 30 (Infosplusgabon) - Tunisia as at 28 August recorded 438 fires that destroyed 1,958 hectares of forests and grasslands, the ministry of Agriculture announced here Sunday in a statement.

Data provided by the ministry showed that the number of fires recorded during the first eight months of this year increased considerably, compared with the same period in 2011-2019 during which 280 fires were recorded.

The fires have posed a big threat to the vegetation cover and ecological balance.

The Directorate General of Forests at the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture indicated that these fires increased particularly between July 22 and the first week of August during which 55 fires were recorded as a result of the rise in temperatures.

Tunisia's forests cover an area of 1.200 million hectares, concentrated mainly in the north-western, central-western and northern regions.
