Imprimer PDF

Niamey, Niger, August 23 (Infosplusgabon) - Some four months before general elections in Niger, the government has published a decree on how independent candidates can emerge for the presidential, legislative and local elections as well as their geographical distribution.

Under the terms of this decree, which was issued following the provisions of Niger's electoral code, the signatures of voters supporting independent candidates are authenticated by judicial officers, judicial police officers or civil registrars.

They are required to verify the authenticity of the registration of the signatories on the electoral register.

For persons who are unable to sign, the fingerprint affixed is equivalent to a signature.

For the presidential election, the signatures must come from at least 20,000 registered voters, distributed in at least five regions, including the city of Niamey and the geographical area of the rest of the world.

The list must include at least 1,000 signatures of voters supporting the independent candidate per region.

For parliamentary and local elections, the signatures shall be recorded on a list of voters supporting the independent candidature, representing at least one per cent of the registered voters in the electoral district concerned.
