Brazzaville, Congo, August 19 (Infosplusgabon) - The technical coordinator of the response against COVID-19, Dr. Gilbert Ndziessi, announced on Monday evening that Congo has recorded 16 coronavirus-related deaths, 85 newly confirmed cases and five new recoveries.
According to him, Congo has recorded a total of 3,835 positive cases, 76 deaths and 1,630 recoveries.
In the country as a whole, there are only two departments -- Les Plateaux, in the centre, Likouala, on the border with the Central African Republic -- which have no infected persons to date.
According to available figures, Brazzaville, the capital, and Pointe-Noire, the main economic and industrial centre, in the south, are the epicentres of the pandemic.
The health services note that children under-10 years are now reported to be infected, even if only in a small proportion -- 50 confirmed cases, representing 1.4 per cent of the total number of infections.
According to the statistics, there is a higher mortality rate among persons aged 40 years and above.
