Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, August 16 (Infosplusgabon) - Burkinabe President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, has condemned Saturday's assassination of the Grand Imam of Djibo (Sahel) by unidentified gunmen.

The Grand Imam "Ghadi", Souaibou Cissé, abducted on Tuesday by armed men, was found dead on Saturday.

"The murder of this religious dignitary, head of the Muslim community in Soum province, is indicative of the inhuman nature of its perpetrators," wrote the Burkinabe President.

"I firmly condemn this heinous assassination, which aims to undermine our model of religious tolerance and the foundations of our Nation", added Mr Kaboré, who called on the Burkinabe people to join forces in order to defeat terrorism.

In a statement, the Burkinabe government stressed that actions are underway to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been the target of terrorist attacks which have claimed many victims and displaced thousands of people.
