Banjul, Gambia, July 21 (Infosplusgabon) - The Gambian government has lifted the ban on export and re-exports trade of essential commodities with immediate effect, amid relaxing COVID-19 restrictive measures.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment said in a statement that the decision was based on the fact that businesses are now normalizing and most of the countries where The Gambia sources its imports have now relaxed their trade-related COVID-19 restrictive measures.
According to the statement, the ministry "wishes to inform the general public, particularly the business community, that Essential commodities Emergency Power Regulation 2020 has been reviewed and amended by lifting the prohibition on export and re-export trade of essential commodities with immediate effect."
The ministry said the objective is to support the economic recovery processes from the effect of the Pandemic.
It pointed out that the business community is therefore encouraged to resume export and re-export of essential commodities.
“The ministry will continue to monitor the development in both the international and domestic markets and will take appropriate actions when necessary to ensure the availability and affordability of essential food commodities.
Furthermore, the business community, while undertaking the export and re-export trade, is strongly advised to follow the ministry of health and WHO COVID-19 guidelines in order to contain the spread of the disease,” the statement concluded.
