Kampala, Uganda, July 14 (Infosplusgabon) - The project to improve the quality of health services at Mulago hospital and in the city of Kampala (MKCCA), carried out between 2012 and 2019 in Uganda, has made it possible to build and renovate several hospitals and improve access populations to quality health care at an affordable cost.

According to a report on its website, the African Development Bank (AfDB) said two new national referral hospitals, with a capacity of 170 beds each, have been opened, increasing access to health care services in the metropolitan area of Kampala, the Ugandan capital.

It said a third hospital, Mulago, the main national reference hospital, has been extensively renovated and equipped. It has been operational since December 31, 2019. In addition, a master plan aims to rationalize the provision of services at the Mulago hospital center in order to strengthen their efficiency and effectiveness.

The MKCCA project, funded to the tune of US$ 76 million, by the AfDB, has contributed to the training of 3,022 health workers, including 400 clinical service professionals from hospitals and 150 senior and middle managers, 35% of which are women.

These reinforcements of hospital staff have, in fact, strengthened the capacity of hospitals to provide quality health care.

"These capacities will be further strengthened with the completion of the implementation of the integrated hospital management system, which will allow full automation of services in the three hospitals," said the project completion report, written by the team led by Peter Ogwang, Senior Health Economist at the Bank.

“The project achieved its development objective, which was to help improve access to quality and affordable health care services for the population of the Kampala metropolitan area. The objectives set with regard to the results of the project were largely achieved and those relating to the products were achieved," notes the report.

The MKCCA project has contributed to efforts to improve the provision of quality health services in the Kampala metropolitan area. "But, given the growing population in the Kampala metropolitan area, it is necessary to make additional investments to maintain these results," advocates the AfDB report.
