Libyan Interior Minister discusses security sector reform in Libya with U.S. officials

Tripoli, Libya, June 25 (Infosplusgabon) - Libya's interior minister in the Government of National Accord, Fathi Bachagha, on Thursday held a videoconference with U.S. administration officials on security cooperation and security reforms in the country.

According to a ministry statement, the meeting focused on efforts to reform the security sector in Libya and the Interior Ministry's plan to develop its various services, on the ministry's Dismantling, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme for the reintegration and dissolution of armed groups.

"The U.S. side praised the department's work in reforming the security sector, and its seriousness in implementing an integrated dismantling, demobilization and reintegration programme, and offered to provide assistance in this area," the statement said.

He said the U.S. State Department had informed the ministry of the Interior that it was studying with various Washington offices and departments the possibility of demining assistance.

Those who took part in the meeting on the Libyan side were deputy interior minister for security affairs Mohamed al-Madaghi, director of the International Police Bureau (Interpol in Libya) Abdelhamid al-Ghazali, director of the General Department of Security Operations, Ali al-Nouwassiri, director of the General Support Department, Mahmoud Fathallah, director of the department of training, Fathi Aoun, and the President of the Criminal Investigation Services, Mahmoud Achour.

On the U.S. side were, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for North African Affairs Henry Worcester, U.S. Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland, General Miguel Correa, Senior Officer for North Africa and the Middle East at the National Security Council at the White House, and Colonel Major Stephen de Meliano, a member of AFRICOM.
