Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, June 22 (InfosplusgabonANA) - Tanzanian football Premier League leaders, Simba Sports Club, are set to strengthen the team’s striking force by signing Ghanaian Michael Sarpong, who has been fired by Rwanda’s African Ryon on disciplinary grounds.

Sources within the Tanzania Vodacom Premier League (VPL) defending champions said on Monday that they were about to sign the striker who scored 24 goals in the Rwandan top flight league to emerge the top scorer in his first season (2018/19).

The 24-year-old striker is a free agent after he was fired by the Rwandan champions when he protested the club’s decision to suspend players’ salaries owing to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s true we are in the final stages of signing Michael Sarpong, but full reports about the move will be announced when the main transfer window opens in July 2020. At the moment our focus is on the VPL championship, which our team is set to clinch,” said the club source.

According to media reports in Rwanda, Sarpong has admitted that there was an agreement in place for him to sign for the Tanzanian champions, and that the deal could be sealed soon.

“The contract is being worked on between my agent and Simba. There are just a few minor details we are yet to agree on,” the player has been quoted as saying.

If his move to Simba succeeds, Sarpong will join Rwandan import, Meddie Kagere, another threat to defenders in the Tanzanian league. Kagere, who joined Simba from Kenya’s Gor Mahia in 2018, was the VPL top scorer with 21 goals in the 2018/19 season.
