Tunis, Tunisia, June 22 (Infosplusgabon) - Tunisian diplomatic authorities on Saturday reacted angrily to the broadcast of a video showing that Tunisian migrants were being humiliated in a detention center in Italy.

Widely shared on Friday on the web, the video which aroused the indignation of internet users, showed an Italian police officer threatening a young Tunisian migrant, slapping, striking and punching another who collapsed unconscious on the floor.

Speaking on Saturday on ShemsFM radio in Tunis, the Tunisian ambassador in Rome, Moez Sinaoui, said that he had "vigorously protested" to the cabinet of the Italian Minister of the Interior, against the behavior of the police officer, whose action illustrates a flagrant violation of human rights and represents a humiliation for Tunisians.

"The dignity of Tunisians is at stake here," he said, noting that the Tunisian embassy will spare no effort in ensuring that the case is properly looked into."

He said that he had already asked the Italian authorities to "immediately suspend the policeman from his duties", and that he was assured by the Italian interior ministry that action is being taken to that effect.

He added that the Tunisian Consulate hired a lawyer on Saturday on the matter which will be dealt with as from June 24.
