Brazzaville, Congo, June 18 (Infosplusgabon) - Congolese Budget Minister Ludovic Ngatsé on Wednesday called on tax officials to improve tax collection to boost revenue.

"We are in a difficult economic situation where we can no longer rely on oil resources. We now rely only on our domestic revenues, namely taxes and customs duties," the minister said during a visit to the Directorate General for Taxes in Brazzaville.

According to him, the task assigned to the Ministry of Finance and Budget is to ensure that the collection of taxes and customs revenue is able to finance the state's expenses.

However, it was noted that revenues for the first four months of the current year had not met government's expectations.

"We found that we are well below our expectations. This is certainly due to the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the grace period granted to companies ends at the end of this month. We'll do what's necessary to motivate you. In return, we are waiting for the results," said Ngatsé.

Asked about unfavourable working conditions in the tax administration department, including the Directorate General, the Minister promised that the situation would be examined at the government level.

The budget targets set for 2020 amount to 739 billion CFA francs. (US$1.00=CFAF 586.00)
