Burundi footballers mourn President Pierre Nkurunziza's passing

Bujumbura, Burundi, June 15 (Infosplusgabon) - Burundi's  first division national football championship games took a break at the weekend until next Friday, due to national mourning of the death of President Pierre Nkurunziza, a great fan of this sports in Burundi, a sports source said in Bujumbura on Monday.

 

 

 

The weeklong mourning was due to officially end on Monday, while the funeral date of for the late illustrious leader is not yet known.

 

In memory of the late president, the Burundi Football Federation (FFB) has decided to hold a minute's silence before the kick-off of the last matches of the national championship, 2019-2020 edition.

 

The championship had already seen many other twists and turns and is due to end on 24 June.

 

As a result of recent general elections, all the FFB's sporting competitions have been temporarily suspended.

 

Stadiums had been requisitioned for political rallies during the election campaign.
