Gaborone, Botswana, June 14 (Infosplusgabon) - Botswana’s health authorities regret that inadequate safe blood supply is a perennial challenge to the country’s health system.

Commemorating the World Blood Donor Day on Sunday, Minister of Health and Wellness Lemogang Kwape said the country experiences shortage of blood in its blood banks.

“Botswana’s blood bank recorded 855 collections against a target of 2,679 in May 2020 (a difference of 1,467 pints), as compared to 2,039 in May 2019,” said Kwape.

The country’s annual blood collection target is 45,000 units, but the authorities’ aim to attain the target by 2023.

“Our combined efforts will surely take us there. Let us remember that a reduction of blood and blood products is a major healthcare services risk,” said Kwape urging the nation to participate in blood donation.
