Gaborone, Botswana, June 13 (Infosplusgabon) - Education authorities in Botswana have announced closure of schools within the greater part of the capital city, Gaborone, following an indefinite lockdown announcement that commenced on Saturday.

“All schools inclusive of private schools within the Greater Gaborone zone are closed as of 13 June 2020 until further notice,” said Fidelis Molao, Minister of Basic Education on Saturday.

The minister said the decision was taken to adhere to government’s call of severe social distancing during the lockdown in the Greater Gaborone zone.

Botswana has recently been divided into seven zones to allow authorities to monitor and contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Gaborone was placed on a total lockdown on Friday following an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.

According to health officials, of the country’s 12 new cases, four were imported cases reported at border posts while eight are local transmissions.

The new cases brought the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Botswana to 60 since the first case was reported in March.

Botswana went on a countrywide lockdown from early April until end of May and only opened up fully at the beginning of June.
