Mauritania riot police disperse demonstrators demanding justice for young man killed by military patrol team

Nouakchott, Mauritania, June11 (Infosplusgabon) - Riot police on Wednesday dispersed a demonstration in Nouakchott demanding justice for a young man killed by an army patrol team near Mbagne, 400 kilometers south-east of Nouakchott-River Valley, on the night of 27 May.

As the demonstration was taking place during the period of the coronavirus pandemic, the protesters moved in small groups.

They wore red masks and canvases in protest against the military blunder and shouted "Justice for Abass Diallo" before being violently charged on in the city centre near the Ministry of Justice.

This demonstration came after a social network campaign through which the diaspora and local activists mobilised Mauritanians to push them to display red to protest against the blunder that led to the death of Abass Diallo.

Following this serious incident, the matter was referred to the courts and a prosecutor ordered a preliminary investigation, the results of which have not yet been made public.
