Tripoli, Libya, June 6 (Infosplusgabon) - The United Nations Security Council has extended for 12 months the mandate for "strict implementation of the arms embargo on the high seas off the coast of Libya".

Resolution 2526 of 2020 adopted at a videoconference meeting held on Friday stipulates that the Secretary-General should submit a report to the Security Council within 11 months of his decision on the implementation of the arms embargo on Libya.

The Council also decided to maintain the question of the arms embargo on Libya "in its effective examination", signaling a series of previous decisions, and the Berlin Conference, held on 19 January, to resolve the Libyan crisis.

The Council noted the important role played by Libya's neighbours and regional organizations, considering that it takes into account its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security under the Charter of the United Nations.

The resolution underlined that the Council is still determined to consider that "terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, constitutes one of the most serious threats to peace and security".

The arms embargo on Libya adopted in 2011 is regularly violated by UN member countries, leading to the flooding of the country with sophisticated and advanced weapons, and turning it into a testing ground.

This situation has been deplored the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, which has also denounced these repeated violations.
