Harare, Zimbabwe, June 1 (Infosplusgabon) - Zimbabwe’s confirmed COVID-19 cases have risen to 178 from 132 mid-last week, as more returning residents at quarantine centres test positive for the deadly virus.

In a statement from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, the government department reported that the cumulative number of tests done to date stood at 45,395.

“To date, the total number of confirmed cases is 178; recovered 29, active cases 145 and 4 deaths, since the onset of the outbreak on 20 March 2020,” the Ministry of Health and Child Care said.

Government insiders tell that the authorities remain concerned over the rapid increase in new infections.

The challenges promoting infections include quarantine centres that have shabby and unhygienic facilities.

The director for Epidemiology and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Portia Manangazira said last week that the government was working on decongesting quarantine centres.

"The fact that some quarantine centres are overcrowded is a cause for concern, but we are doing all we can to decongest them by decentralising operations to provinces," she said.
