Brazzaville, Congo, May 25  (Infosplusgabon) - The Technical Coordinator of Congo's COVID-19 Response Committee, Dr. Gilbert Ndziessi, announced on Sunday in Brazzaville that 18 new confirmed cases of coronavirus have been recorded.

According to a cumulative assessment compiled by the Committee, the total number of confirmed cases stands at 487 of which 147 patients have recovered and 16 have died.

The 18 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours show that the disease continues to spread and could impede the desired de-confinement.

Many Congolese have not been respecting the wearing of face masks, made mandatory by President Denis Sassou-Nguesso.

"It is not uncommon to meet many Congolese in the mainstream markets having their masks folded around their necks, making the measure of the mandatory wearing of the mask unproductive. (This is) a misuse that seems to turn the mask into a simple decorating tool," Dr Ndziessi said.

For some Congolese, who say they can't stand wearing this protective tool, the mask only helps them to pass through checkpoints.

"Since the fight against the coronavirus pandemic is everyone's business, every Congolese should avoid taking or encouraging acts that put their countrymen in danger," Dr. Ndziessi said, urging people to continue to observe the government's measures.
