Tunis, Tunisia, May 25 (Infosplusgabon) - Units of the Tunisian gendarmerie in the Sfax, Nabeul, Bizerte and Tunis regions have foiled four attempts at illegal migration in the past 48 hours and arrested 117 people, Gendarmerie spokesperson Housseddine Jebabli said on Sunday.

In the southern region of Sfax, security patrols on Saturday arrested 90 people of different African nationalities who wanted to smuggle themselves across the country's maritime border towards the Italian coast.

In Bizerte in the north, regional maritime units arrested 15 people on the same day, two of whom were wanted and two "salafists" who were under surveillance, all of whom were trying to migrate to Europe.

Meanwhile, security patrols in the Nabeul region, 60 km south-east of the capital, arrested an inflatable boat with an engine on Saturday with five people on board who wanted to smuggle themselves into Italy, including three people who were wanted for their involvement in court cases.

Navy units in the capital region foiled an attempted illegal migration to Italy and arrested seven people.

Attempts at illegal migration have increased in recent times, notably during the month of Ramadan, with illegal immigrants exploiting the hours of Suhure (morning meal) and breaking the fast.
