Port-Louis, Mauritius, May 25 (Infosplusgabon) – Mauritius recorded two new cases of coronavirus on Sunday among a group of 149 passengers who were quarantined since their arrival from India on 10 May, after almost one month without a positive case.

This brings the total number of cases to 334 since the beginning of the epidemic in the country.

The spokesperson of the National Communication Committee on COVID-19, Dr Zouberr Joomaye, said a total of 101,052 tests, made up of 26,339 PCR and 74,713 Rapid Antigen tests, have been carried out in Mauritius, on about 8% of the 1.3 million population from mass screening of the public, including all front-liners.

Regarding essential medicine supplies, he said India has shipped a second consignment, including some 10 tonnes of ayurvedic medicines, to Mauritius.

A 14-member Indian Medical Assistance Team has also arrived to collaborate with the health authorities through mutual sharing of experience and expertise. The members of the team comprise of, among others, a community medicine specialist, a pulmonologist and an anesthesiologist.

The first consignment of 13 tonnes of essential medicines from India, which included 500,000 tablets of Hydroxychloroquine, arrived on 15 April 2020.

For his part, the Tourism and Leisure Minister, Joe Lesjongard, highlighted that the pandemic had caused a worldwide slowdown of several important economic activities in various sectors, including tourism, which has worsened with the closure of frontiers.

“However, we are working together along with key stakeholders to curb these impacts on the tourism sector which generates around 120,000 direct and indirect employment in Mauritius,” he said.

The Health and Wellness Minister Kailesh Jagutpal appealed to all persons suffering from high fever to get screened at the different COVID-19 testing centres, which have been operational for a week in four hospitals.

Also, an appointment-based system has been put in place in the five regional hospitals to avoid overcrowding and cases requiring urgent care are being attended to in a timely manner.
