Tripoli, Libya, May 24  (Infosplusgabon) – The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the European Union (EU) Delegation in Tripoli have congratulated the Libyan people on the occasion of the Eid El-Fitr celebrated on Sunday and called for a cessation of hostilities by respecting the spirit of the religious event.

In a communiqué, UNSMIL expressed the wish that the celebration would mark "the end of the conflict, fighting and division in Libya".

The UN Mission also wished that the feast will bring with it "the hope for peace, tolerance and unity", and the end of conflicts, fighting and divisions so that Libyan women, men and children would enjoy stability, comfort and the decent living they deserve.

The head of European Union Mission, Alan Bugeja, called for respect for the spirit of the Eid El-Fitr for the celebration of the holiday in peace, reconciliation and compassion, which is the essence of Islam.

In a communiqué, Mr Bugeja stressed that this year’s holiday coincides with the thousands of Libyans feeling the effects of the ongoing war, which continues to cause death, destruction and displacement as the country is fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said: "For the second consecutive year, I invite all those in power to respect the spirit of Eid El-Fitr", adding that "the Eid should be a moment of joy and celebration and to make peace with all neighbours".
