Cotonou, Benin, May 17 (Infosplusgabon) - Benin’s churches, mosques, and other places of worship closed to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic could reopen as early as June 2, according to a report of a meeting between leaders of different faiths and the government.

For the effectiveness of this reopening, religious denominations must wait for the government's announcement, which will be accompanied by various conditions for effective resumption on 2 June, the report stressed.

As part of the fight against the spread of the pandemic, Benin, among other measures, decided to close churches, mosques, and other places of worship.

On the ground, religious denominations have effectively closed places of worship.

Communication between leaders and the faithful is carried out, depending on the case, by telephone, audio-Benin, which registered its first case of infection on 16 March, has to date had a total of 339 confirmed cases, with 254 persons under treatment, 83 persons cured, and two deaths.

A health zone has been set up around the 15 communes considered to be more sensitive, and schools and places of worship have been closed while the wearing of masks is compulsory throughout the national territory.

Since Monday, the government has lifted the health zone and proceeded to the partial opening of schools.

To better secure the country and ensure that any passenger disembarking through Cotonou airport is not a carrier of the virus, all travellers entering through this airport are now subject to systematic screening.
