Proxies banned during Sunday's vote in Benin

Cotonou, Benin, May 17 (Infosplusgabon) - Proxy voting will not be allowed during Sunday's polls throughout Benin, according to a notice published by the National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA) in charge of the elections.

"...The president of CENA brings to the attention of the public and electoral agents that CENA has not issued any proxy voting form. Therefore, no voter may vote by proxy", says the notice, a copy of which was obtained by PANA early Sunday.

Beninese people are voting this Sunday to elect their representatives in the communes of the national territory.

Five political parties are participating. They are the Progressive Union (UP), Republican Bloc (BR), Democratic Renewal Party (PRD), Cauris Forces for an Emerging Benin (FCBE, the only opposition party), and the Democratic Union for a New Benin (UDBN).

To counter the spread of COVID-19, Benin experienced, for the first time, an exclusive media election campaign. Private and public media outlets were selected to receive and disseminate the messages of the contending parties to the population.

At the end of the ballot, only those lists that have received at least 10 percent of the valid votes cast at the national level are eligible for the allocation of seats.

The number of seats to be allocated to each district is determined by dividing the number of its population by the communal quotient.
