Banjul, Gambia, May 16 (Infosplusgabon) – The Gambian government on Friday expressed gratitude to the World Bank for a US$30-million-dollar development assistance to it.

The global financial body recently announced the US$30 million development policy grant to The Gambia, prompting the country’s Finance and Economic Affairs Minister, Mambury Njie, to thank World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors for the development assistance.

‘‘It shows that, as a country, we are doing well economically and have successfully reached the targets set despite the challenges we face,’’ the Finance Minister said in a statement.

‘‘It is based on the economic performance of the country that we can access all these funds and we hope to be able to sustain this performance.’’

Mr. Njie also thanked the team within his ministry and President Adama Barrow for creating the enabling environment.

Meanwhile, the World Bank grant will be used to help in enhancing the financial and operational performance of Gambia’s powerhouse, the National Water and Electricity Company to provide cheaper, more reliable, and cleaner energy.

The funds will be further utilized to support the restructuring and ringfencing of the country’s telecom infrastructure to strengthen the digital economy.
