Tripoli, Libya, May 16 (Infosplusgabon) - The United States has announced an additional US$6.5 million contribution to Libya to support efforts by the north African country to respond to the emerging coronavirus.

According to a statement issued Friday evening by the U.S. Embassy in Libya, "with this additional amount the total contribution of the United States amounts to more than US$12 million".

It said that "this funding will be used to increase the capacity of medical authorities to detect and prevent the spread and control of the emerging coronavirus in Libya, and will also help prevent the spread of the epidemic among refugees and migrants in precarious situations, by providing them with humanitarian assistance".

Since the first case of coronavirus infection was detected on 24 March, Libya has so far recorded 64 confirmed cases, including 28 recoveries and 3 deaths.

The U.S. Embassy statement recalls that "since 2011, the United States has invested more than US$715 million in public health and development in general in Libya, including emergency health programs to help preserve people's health and prevent disease",  explaining that "this assistance has strengthened the capacity of many national and local institutions and organizations now involved in responding to the coronavirus epidemic".
