Guinea gets new electoral umpire

Conakry, Guinea, May 15  (Infosplusgabon) - Guinean President Alpha Condé on Thursday signed a decree appointing Mamadou Kaba as the new chairman of the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI).

A lawyer by training, Kaba replaces Amadou Salif Kébé, who died on 17 April as a result of the coronavirus infection.

The late Kébé, one of the first victims of COVID-19, who came from the civil society that inherited the seat of CENI's president, organized the legislative and referendum elections on 22 March, which were boycotted by several opposition parties, which argued that the vote for a new constitution is intended to allow President Condé to run for another term beyond his second and final five-year term, which ends in October.
