Lomé, Togo, May 13 (Infosplusgabon) - An outbreak of the African Swine Fever is raging on a farm in southwest Togo, Infosplusgabon was informed by official sources in Lomé on Wednesday.

The farm is located in the canton of Assahoun, in the prefecture of Avé, about 50 km southwest of Lomé.

The number of pigs decimated by this epidemic is, for the moment, 44 and according to an official statement, "the government has taken a series of preventive and disinfection measures to stop the spread of the disease".

In the area where the farm is located, the following measures have been carried out: "the slaughter and destruction of all residual pigs, as well as derived products in all pig farms surrounding the outbreak in the canton of Assahoun; disinfection and a sanitary vacuum for a period of 6 months, a ban on the movement of pigs, their derived products, as well as breeding equipment and feed in the infection zone for a period of 6 months," said the ministry in charge of livestock.

The government, which is going to grant compensation to farmers whose animals will be slaughtered and destroyed by the veterinary services, will only authorize the resumption of breeding activities in the locality once reassured that the epidemic is over.

Togo often manages this type of swine fever epidemic, which rages in several localities in the maritime region and in the north where pork is widely consumed.

In 2014 and 2016, it caused a lot of damage to farms in the south of the country.
