Tunisian Chedli Klibi, former Secretary General of the Arab League, dies

Tunis, Tunisia, May 13 (Infosplusgabon) - Former Tunisian Minister of Culture and Information before rising to become Secretary General of the Arab League, Chedli Klibi, died on Wednesday at the age of 94.

 

 

 

A man of letters and culture, associate from Sorbonne, trade unionist and teacher, he had occupied several responsibilities since the independence of Tunisia in 1956.

 

He directed the Arab League from 1979 to 1990 when the headquarters of the pan-Arab organization was in Tunis, before resigning following the American invasion of Iraq and the Gulf War (1990-1991).

 

He was Tunisian Prime Minister for Cultural Affairs and Information (1961-1979) under President Habib Bourguiba.

 

A man of communication, Chedli Klibi has authored several books, including Arabs facing the Palestinian question, East-West: violent peace and Habib Bourguiba: x-ray of a reign.
