Nouakchott, Mauritania, May 9  (Infosplusgabon) - The Union of Forces for Progress (UFP), a Mauritanian opposition party, has condemned the management of Funds meant for palliatives to the populations, victims of confinement during the global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

In a statement made public on Saturday, the party criticised the government, saying that the way the government is managing the fund has not produced the expected results.

"Late engagement, derisory quantities, limited number of beneficiaries, the lack of transparency which is causing widespread discontent among citizens, were some of the reasons the process is failing," the party said in the statement.

However, it welcomes the health and safety management of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) which "remains generally under control".

Mauritanian President Mohamed Cheikh Ghazouani announced the creation of a National Solidarity Fund to deal with the health, economic and social effects of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in which the State undertakes to pay 2.5 billion MRU (about US$ 676 million) into the fund which can also receive contributions from individuals and corporate organizations and external partners.

The Mauritanian president added that the government would pay 5 billion ouguiyas (about US$ 37 million) to 30,000 vulnerable families across the country.
