Accra, Ghana, May 9 (Infosplusgabon) - Ghana’s confirmed cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) have ballooned to 4,012, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reported on Friday night.

This represents an increase of 921 cases from the last update announced on Thursday.

GHS said 20 more persons have recovered to bring the number of those cured to 323 while the number of deaths remains 18.

GHS said over 50% of the new cases are as a result of an outbreak in an industrial facility with about 1,300 workers, where 533 of them have tested positive.

Greater Accra Region has a whopping 3,436 cases, Ashanti Region has 210 and Eastern Region has 96.

The government recently lifted the partial lockdown on three cities and two townships in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions.

Ghana has carried out more than 100,000 tests.

The spike in Ghana's cases come even as the health authorities say the West African country may have reached its peak although they warn that it is not yet out of the woods.

The Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Ebenezer Badu Sarkodie, said that the rate of infection is yet to decline, but this will only happen if the preventive protocols for the virus are adhered to.

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has slammed the government, saying: "What these will do, instead, is to consolidate a false sense of security in the Ghanaian public that will obscure our view of the danger we face."

Haruna Iddrisu, minority leader in Parliament, told a news conference in Accra last Thursday that government failed to anticipate the devastating effects that a COVID-19 outbreak would have on the social life and the economy, and were grossly unprepared to soften the blow for the most vulnerable people and households when a lockdown became necessary.
