Tripoli, Libya, May 2 (Infosplusgabon) - The Speaker of Libyan House of Representatives (Parliament), Aguila Saleh, said here Saturday the political initiative he presented last week on the restructuring of the presidential council of the government of national accord "aims to get out of the crisis in Libya with minimum damage".

Saleh added, as quoted by the Libyan press on Saturday, that there was no dispute between the speakership of the House of Representatives and the Libyan national army.

He stressed that "there is no contradiction between the initiative of the speakership of the House of Representatives and the commander of the army, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, about the need to abandon the Skhirat agreement and end the political deadlock in the country".

The head of Libya's eastern based national army, Marshal Haftar, announced that he had been mandated by Libyan citizens to lead the country, signaling the abandonment of the Libyan political agreement signed in 2015 in Skhirat, Morocco, by the belligerents under the auspices of the United Nations.

But this announcement was widely rejected, both locally and internationally, citing that the Libyan political agreement was the only framework of the political process recognized by the international community and that Libya's future could not be determined by a unilateral decision.

The speaker of the parliament, Aguila Saleh, added that the initiative he "has presented to get out of the Libyan crisis is based on the reality and nature of Libyan society".

"Any political initiative that ignores any of Libya's regions; (Tripolitaine, Cyrenaica and Fezzan) will not find a path to success," he noted.

Saleh  presented an initiative based on the fact that "each of the three regions will individually choose the one who will represent it in the Presidential Council composed of a President and two Vice-Presidents, in agreement with each other or by secret vote under the supervision of the United Nations".

“The initiative calls for the Presidential Council, after its approval, to appoint the Prime Minister and his deputies representing the three regions to form a government that will be presented to the House of Representatives for the vote of confidence,” Mr. Saleh added.

His proposal stipulates that the prime minister and his two deputies will be partners in the adoption of the decisions of the council of ministers.

This initiative has received the support of many countries and international organizations as a realistic choice that can unite the adherence of the various Libyan parties.
