Cotonou, Benin, May 2 (Infosplusgabon) - Benin Friday confirmed 26 new cases of Covid-19 infections, taking the total cases to 90, sources at the ministry of Health said.

From 64 cases as at last Sunday, the number of people infected by coronavirus in Benin reached 90, two deaths, 46 patients under treatment, and 42 cured.

Benin on 16 March confirmed its first case of COVID-19 infection, a 49-year-old Burkinabè who had travelled before to Belgium and his country.

To limit the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, the government decided to undertake the systematic screening of all persons placed in quarantine or self-isolation.

Formerly limited to the zones of the health belt, the wearing of masks since Tuesday has become obligatory all over the national territory.

Last Saturday, the authorities received 17,200 quick screening testing equipment for COVID-19 to strengthen the existing system.

The government has also announced the establishment of laboratories in the 12 departments of the country to increase the number of screening centres.

The restriction measures imposed on 15 districts judged at risk that were intended to end last Monday have been extended to 10 May.
