Gaborone, Botswana, May 1 (Infosplusgabon) – The Southern African Development Community (SADC) secretariat has challenged the bloc to continue implementing COVID-19 response measures, to protect the labour markets, jobs and incomes.
Stergomena Lawrence Tax, SADC Executive Secretary, on Friday called for more support to vulnerable workers in the informal economy, and facilitating economic recovery and socio-economic stability.
“May I appeal to workers and employers to take the COVID-19 pandemic seriously, and continue to observe and implement preventive measures as guided by respective national health authorities and the World Health Organization,” said Ms. Tax in a statement to celebrate the International Workers' Day.
She further said that SADC must remain united in the fight against the pandemic.
She bemoaned that over 25 million jobs will be lost globally, as a result of the extreme measures being used to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Ms. Tax also called on governments working with other stakeholders, including the private sector, and civil societies, to continue strengthening health systems and to guarantee the provision of safe and healthy working conditions for those on the frontlines.
