Conakry, Guinea, May 1 (Infosplusgabon) - Guinea has become the third country in West Africa to have the highest number of patients infected with Covid-19, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The National Agency for Health Security (ANSS) recorded on Thursday 144 new cases bringing total confirmed cases to  1,495 confirmed cases, with 322 of them cured and 7 deaths.

In the WHO ranking, Ghana leads with more than 2,000 cases, followed by Nigeria with 1,700 cases, followed by Guinea which has overtaken Côte d'Ivoire.

Faced with the exponential growth of Covid-19 cases in the country, President Alpha Condé has met with the medical profession to whom he reiterated his appeal, urging doctors to keep their differences aside in order to come together "as one team" to wipe out the disease.

President Condé this week discussed with the medics several topics related to the response to Covid-19.

These included strengthening surveillance and enforcement of preventive measures.

He also proposed an increase in the number of monitors from the current 260 and the estimated 65 collectors.

He asked the medical profession to send him a list of requirements for medicines and equipment as soon as possible.

The Head of State asked doctors to redouble their efforts to overcome the disease before the start of the rainy season, which usually begins in June.

The US government released at the beginning of the week a package of US$8 million to Guinea to help it provide the population with quality health care and also strengthen the health system.
