Congo extends for 15 days home confinement due to coronavirus

Brazzaville, Congo, May 1 (Infosplusgabon) - Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso on Thursday extended the home confinement  of the entire population for 15 days due to the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic with 220 confirmed cases in the country.

''The current containment will run from May 1 to May 15, 2020. During this period, we will assess the effectiveness of its implementation. In case the observed results prove encouraging, the government could consider an orderly de-containment plan applicable by stages from 16 May 2020", the president said in a message on the health situation.

According to Sassou-Nguesso, the result of the current phase of containment, as well as compliance with preventive measures and the strengthening of the capacity of mass testing for coronavirus are necessary conditions to proceed to an orderly and efficient de-containment.

"This triple requirement prepares for the gradual return of our country to a normal life",  he added.

The president also decided on large scale screening tests, strengthening clinical and biological means of response and the mandatory wearing of the mask for anyone present in closed or open public spaces.

In the social sphere, the Congolese head of state reiterated the government's guidelines for organising cash transfers for 200,000 of the most vulnerable households, including 100,000 in Brazzaville, 60,000 in Pointe-Noire and 40,000 in other departments of the country.

In addition, he announced a contribution of 50 billion FCFA from the State to the National Solidarity Fund.

According to him, donor aid has raised 2.584 billion CFA francs to date, distributed  as follows: Coronavirus Fund 1.124 billion CFA francs and 1.460 billion CFA francs.
