Port-Louis, Mauritius, May 1 (Infosplusgabon) - The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, said on Friday that the health curfew in force in the island since 20 March due to the spread of coronavirus, which was due to end on 4 May, has been extended until 1 June 2020.

In a televised address, the Prime Minister said the government took the decision to prevent the resurgence of new cases of the virus.

Currently, the situation, as far as the disease is concerned, according to the Ministry of Health, is that only 7 patients are carriers of the virus while 312 have been cured, and have left the treatment centres.

No new cases have been reported in the last five days.

According to him, the spread of the epidemic has stabilised in Mauritius, "but maximum vigilance is still required to avoid a second wave of cases of this disease on the island".

Giving further details of the government's decision, Jugnauth said schools will remain closed until 1 August, 2020, along with shopping malls and stores selling clothing and other luxury goods.

Public, social and religious gatherings will remain banned.

However, the Prime Minister said some economic activities will be allowed from 15 May.

Supermarkets and bakeries and other food shops will remain open but in compliance with health regulations.
