Bujumbura, Burundi, April 25 (Infosplusgabon) - Burundi has registered its first confirmed case of coronavirus infection of a doctor, the ministry of health announced on Friday.

He is an intern in the surgery department of the pandemic treatment centre at the Prince Louis Rwagasore Clinic in Bujumbura. This brings to 12 the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Burundi.

The search and identification of all those who have been in contact with this intern is underway, according to a press release.

The Ministry of Health reiterated its call to the populations to remain "calm", while scrupulously respecting the individual and collective preventive measures against Covid-19.

Unlike other countries in the sub-region where populations are confined, socio-economic activities are normal in Burundi, with markets, public transport, parties, places of worship and leisure open to the public.

No postponement is also envisaged of the general elections which begin with the presidential election on 20 May 20, with the participation of 5,126,351 voters.

Only the vote of the Burundian diaspora abroad was canceled due to the Covid-19 in the host countries.

The Burundi Football Federation (FFB) has decided to suspend all competitions, "until further notice", officially to give the stadiums to the stakeholders of the next elections.
