South African child rapist released on parole

Cape Town, South Africa, April 25 (Infosplusgabon) – Former Wimbledon champion and convicted child rapist Bob Hewitt was released from prison on Friday after serving a three-year sentence.

 

Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said Hewitt was transferred to his Eastern Cape home where he will remain under house arrest until 2023.

 

In 2015, the former Grand Slam tennis champion was convicted of the rape of two young teenagers and the sexual assault of another who he coached in the 1980s and 1990s. He was sentenced to an effective six years and will serve the remainder of his sentence under parole.

 

Hewitt who was born in Australia and moved to South Africa as a teenager, won seven world titles in singles and 65 in doubles. He was ranked the 6th best player in the world in the 1960s.

 

He was permanently expelled from the International Tennis Hall of Fame in the United States following his conviction.
