Port Louis, Mauritius, April 24 (Infosplusgabon) - The Muslim community in Mauritius begins the first day of Ramadan on Saturday, April 25, the month of fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam, a statement from the Jummah Masjid, issued on Friday in Port Louis announced.

The Mauritian population of 1.3 million is made up of 18 per cent Muslims, whose ancestors came from India nearly 180 years ago.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the national communication committee on COVID-19, Dr. Zouberr Joomaye, said at his daily briefing on Thursday that the government had asked the Muslim population to "pray at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic and containment".

Usually, during this month, Muslims gather every night in mosques for collective and other prayer sessions.

"Close contact between people facilitates the transmission of the virus. As a result, there is a very high risk of contamination, even with the wearing of masks," he said.
