Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, April 19 (Infosplusgabon) -  Professor Ali Ouédraogo, president of the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (SOGOB), says pregnant women account for about one percent of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Burkina Faso.

"To date (17 April), we have seen 4 cases of COVID-19 in pregnant women who account for about 1 percent of Covid-19 cases in Burkina Faso," said Prof. Ouédraogo, who works at the Tengandogo University Hospital in Ouagadougou, where cases of coronavirus disease are treated.

According to him, the main difficulty for obstetrician gynaecologists is the monitoring of pregnant women in this context where social distance is recommended and where they are unable to do teleconsultation.

"Nevertheless, we are trying to address their concerns. In the face of signs of danger, the consultation is maintained and in the absence of particularity, appointments are postponed,"  he said.

With regard to treatment, he indicated that according to the current protocol, pregnant women received chloroquine as other patients and obstetrician gynaecologists followed up, in collaboration with the management team.

SOGOB is involved in raising awareness; through the dissemination of evidence-based practices, to health professionals and actors in the world of communication.

"We have developed, in collaboration with the ministry of health and other professional societies, such as the Burkina Faso Paediatric Society (SOBUPED), the Mother-Child High Basin Network (REMEHBS), the BurkinaBen Association of Midwives and Maieuticians (ABSFM), a guide to the management of pregnant women and newborns in the face of a Covid-19 infection.

“We also raise awareness among women through our website (www.sogob.org) and our Facebook page (Sogob.org)," he continued.

Prof. Ouédraogo called on the public to comply with the restriction measures recommended by the ministry of health.

With regard to the use of masks, he urged the population to practice at the port to prevent it from becoming a source of contamination.

"The mask should be considered a contact person. So we should wash our hands every time we handle the mask," he said.

A total of 557 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, including 216 women and 341 men, with 228 cases under treatment since 9 March 2020 in Burkina Faso.
