Cotonou, Benin, April 17 (Infosplusgabon) – Benin says only the media will be involved in the campaign for the country's local level election scheduled for 17 May to counter the spread of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Sunday.
In a meeting with candidates of political parties involved in the election, INEC explained that this will be an exclusively media election campaign, without meetings, caravans or door-to-door electoral visits.
It will also distribute masks and alcohol-based sanitisers to electoral agents (coordinators of districts, assistant coordinators, members of polling stations and delegates of parties) and the voters at the polling centres.
Candidates and leaders of political parties will be issued with pass to facilitate their movement outside of health zones.
Beninese will vote on 17 May to elect their representatives in the communes.
Five political parties - the Progressive Union (UP), the Republican Bloc (BR), the Party for Democratic Regeneration (PRD), the Cauris Forces for Emerging Benin (FCBE) and the Democratic Union for New Benin (UDBN) - are contesting the election.
