Khartoum, Sudan, April 20 (Infosplusgabon) - The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairman, Musa Faki, on Saturday conferred with the head of the political committee of the Transitional Military Council in the Sudan, Lt.-Gen. Omar Zainul Abdeen, discussing the most recent political developments in the Sudan and how the council plans to revert to civilian rule as the African Union has demanded.

But the official Sudan News Agency said the two men actually discussed “the role the African union could play to help the Sudan overcome this critical moment in its (Sudan’s) political history.”

At the meeting, the Sudanese official stressed that the role of the Military Council in Sudan was to set the conducive climate so that civilian political forces will take over ruling in a democratic and peaceful manner.

Faki was quoted as saying that the AU considers Sudan a vital member within Africa and that the AU understands the reasons behind the popular revolution in the Sudan and the important role played by the Sudanese Armed forces in it.

It said Faki underlined the important role played by the army to bring closer the different Sudanese political forces. He, however, said it was vital that the different Sudanese political forces agree on a transitional period.

The AU initially slammed the military Council in the Sudan with an ultimatum, saying they have to hand over power to civilians within two weeks or the AU will take action against Khartoum.

The AU usually suspends the activities of any member states where there is a coup d’état.

Faki is due to meet with Chairman of the Transitional Military Council (TMC), Lt.-Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, and members of the Council, besides holding a series of meetings with the Sudanese political forces.
