Tunisian president Essebsi receives US Congress delegation

Tunis, Tunisia, April 20 (Infosplusgabon) – The Tunisian president, Beji Caïd Essebsi, on Saturday received in audience a US Congress delegation, led by the judicial commission chairman, Senator Lindsey Graham.

 


A communiqué issued by the Tunisian presidency, said the US congressmen declared that “the visit is aimed at reaffirming the greater interest their country pays to the success of the strong democratic experience in Tunisia and expressed Washington’s commitment to back the efforts on the establishment of democratic institutions and also to take up the economic and security issues facing the country”.


In this context, the US congress delegation praised the successful efforts made by Tunisia in the fight against terrorism and extremism and the key role the country played as a growing democracy in a bid to ensure stability in the region in general," added the communiqué.


As for the Tunisian president, he insisted on the friendly relationship and cooperation between the two countries, calling for the consolidation of the strategic partnership that links them, to raise those relations to the level of bilateral cooperation in addition to diversifying its domains.


He expressed the wish of his country to see US support to Tunisia strengthened in the political and economic domains.

The talks focused on several international and regional issues as well as the situation in Libya.

 


President Essebsi said that Tunisia is following closely the latest developments of the Libyan crisis and their effects on the Libyan people and the stability in Tunisia and neighbouring countries in general.

 


He stressed the everlasting efforts made by Tunisia to encourage the Libyan parties to prevail the highest interest of their country and to carry on dialogue under the aegis of the United Nations in a bid to reach global and durable political settlement which guarantees Libya’s stability and unity, spares the Libyans more suffering and enable their country to recover security as quick as possible.


The US congress delegation however met with the head of the Tunisian government, Youssef Chahed, with whom they discussed “several important issues, including the strategic partnership between Tunisia and the United States and the strengthening of the political, economic and security cooperation between the two countries”.


According to a communiqué issued by the Tunisian government, the US congressmen described the talks as ‘’profitable’’ and showed their pleasure to see Tunisia “move forward safely towards development and democracy”.
