Mauritius to host 17th HIV/AIDS Indian Ocean symposium next week

Port-Louis, Mauritius, November 17 (Infosplusgabon) - Mauritius will host the 17th HIV/AIDS Indian Ocean Symposium from 20-22 November to discuss HIV-related topics such as prevention, trivialization of infection, discrimination against people living with HIV and homosexuality.

 

 

Some 125 delegates from Indian Ocean Commission member countries - Comoros, Madagascar, Reunion, Seychelles, Rodrigues, and Mauritius are expected to attend.

 

In a statement released on Saturday in Port Louis, the Office of the Prime Minister announced that eminent professors from France such as Dr. Jean Claude Tardy, Professor Laurence Weiss, Professor Stanislas Pol, and Dr. Françoise Linard, as well as Dr. David Mete from La Reunion will attend.

 

The symposium will also feature Ministers from Comoros, Madagascar and Seychelles.

 

Topics to be discussed include roles and responsibilities within countries and in the Indian Ocean area; the management of drug use in 2018 and the challenges of new synthetic substances; epidemiology, screening, and management of HIV/AIDS in the Indian Ocean.

 

The HIV and AIDS prevalence rate in Mauritius is 0.88% among those aged 15 years and older.

 

A total of 7,039 cases of AIDS have been recorded in Mauritius between 1987 when the first case of was recorded and to December 2017. Of these, 1,754 are women.
